What we can and cannot do

We are not a clinic, not the NHS, not an optician and not a surgeon. We do not operate, diagnose, refer or hold a date. Nothing here is medical advice, and we cannot tell you whether you need surgery or how bad a cataract is. Only an optician or eye surgeon who examines you can do that.

Sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your sight, flashes with a shower of floaters, or a painful red eye need help now, not a form. Go to A&E or call 999.

For driving, check the DVLA eyesight guidance; we do not give driving rules. A private date does not cancel an NHS listing unless you choose to come off the NHS list.

What we can do: explain prices, what packages include and clinic types, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent eye clinic or hospital that covers your area so it can contact you. Free for you. The clinic may pay us.

Four steps to a private cataract assessment

  1. One eye or both. Prices are usually per eye. Ask how the second eye is priced; see second eye.
  2. What the package includes. Check the first consultation, tests, lens type, aftercare and later laser. See what is included.
  3. Clinic type. Eye-surgery clinic group or private hospital. Compare the price on the same lens and the same inclusions. See cost.
  4. Ask one clinic to contact you. Use the form. One partner clinic may call or email you. Nothing is booked, and no date is held, until you agree it with the clinic.

How much does each cataract lens type cost privately?

Whole price per eye, self-pay, from each clinic's own price page, 5 October 2026:

  • Practice Plus Group: standard monofocal £2,099; enhanced monofocal £2,249; enhanced monofocal toric £2,649; full visual multifocal £2,949; multifocal toric £3,099; extended depth of focus (EDOF) £3,099; EDOF toric £3,249. Consultation £145 extra.
  • Newmedica: standard monofocal £2,295; premium monofocal £2,795; premium monofocal toric £3,195; multifocal, multifocal toric, EDOF and EDOF toric £3,595. Newmedica says the price includes the consultant's fee, the clinic, the lens and aftercare, and that the consultation is free.
  • Nuffield Health: no lens prices on the page we checked.

The lens names are the clinics' own. Ask what a lens is meant to do for your sight before you compare prices.

What lens does the NHS usually use?

PHIN says: "The NHS typically offers a monofocal lens, which has a single point of focus." NICE guideline NG77, recommendation 1.4.2, says: "Do not offer multifocal intraocular lenses for people having cataract surgery." That is guidance for the NHS; private clinics do list multifocal lenses.

What is a toric lens for?

Clinics list toric versions of their lenses at a higher price, and PHIN names astigmatism correction as one of the add-ons that changes the cost. NICE recommendation 1.4.5 says to consider on-axis surgery or limbal-relaxing incisions to reduce astigmatism after the operation. Whether you have astigmatism worth treating is for the optician or surgeon who examines you.

Do I choose the lens?

PHIN says you will usually have a choice of lens type, including multifocal options, depending on your needs. The surgeon examines you and advises; we cannot. Tick "distance and reading" on the form only to say you want to discuss it.

How much is a multifocal lens for cataract surgery?

On 5 October 2026, Practice Plus Group listed cataract surgery with a full visual multifocal lens at £2,949 per eye and Newmedica listed multifocal at £3,595 per eye. Both are whole prices for one eye, not the extra on top.

How much more is a toric lens?

At Practice Plus Group, an enhanced monofocal toric lens is £2,649 per eye against £2,099 for a standard lens. At Newmedica, a premium monofocal toric lens is £3,195 against £2,295.

Does the NHS offer multifocal lenses?

NICE guideline NG77 says multifocal lenses should not be offered for people having cataract surgery, and PHIN says the NHS typically offers a monofocal lens.
