Private Cataract

What is included in a private cataract surgery package?

Last reviewed 5 October 2026 by Pete, editor (not a clinician). Figures checked 5 October 2026.

PHIN says a package usually covers the surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees but does not always include the first consultation, typically £180–£250. Standard lenses start at £2,099 per eye at the cheapest clinic we checked; toric, multifocal and extended-depth lenses cost more. NHS England's July 2026 median ophthalmology wait: 10.2 weeks. Checked 5 October 2026.

Not medical advice. We cannot tell you whether you need surgery. Sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your sight, flashes with a shower of floaters, or a painful red eye: do not use this form, go to A&E or call 999.

Spire and Nuffield count different things in their prices, so we do not average them. Listing a clinic does not mean it is a partner of ours. We delete any row we cannot re-check. What we can and cannot do

We are not a clinic, not the NHS, not an optician and not a surgeon. We do not operate, diagnose, refer or hold a date. Nothing here is medical advice, and we cannot tell you whether you need surgery or how bad a cataract is. Only an optician or eye surgeon who examines you can do that.

Sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your sight, flashes with a shower of floaters, or a painful red eye need help now, not a form. Go to A&E or call 999.

For driving, check the DVLA eyesight guidance; we do not give driving rules. A private date does not cancel an NHS listing unless you choose to come off the NHS list.

What we can do: explain prices, what packages include and clinic types, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent eye clinic or hospital that covers your area so it can contact you. Free for you. The clinic may pay us.

Four steps to a private cataract assessment

  1. One eye or both. Prices are usually per eye. Ask how the second eye is priced; see second eye.
  2. What the package includes. Check the first consultation, tests, lens type, aftercare and later laser. See what is included.
  3. Clinic type. Eye-surgery clinic group or private hospital. Compare the price on the same lens and the same inclusions. See cost.
  4. Ask one clinic to contact you. Use the form. One partner clinic may call or email you. Nothing is booked, and no date is held, until you agree it with the clinic.

What does a cataract package usually cover?

PHIN's wording: "A package usually covers the main costs of your care, including the surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees. It does not always include your first consultation, and some extras (e.g. physiotherapy) may be charged separately. Always ask the hospital to confirm what is included in writing before you book."

What the clinics we checked say they include:

  • Practice Plus Group: consultant fees from start to finish, a pre-operative nurse review, prescriptions, anaesthetic and post-operative appointments. Consultation £145 extra, and a charge for any diagnostic tests needed after it.
  • Newmedica: the consultant's fee, the clinic's facilities, the lens and aftercare. It says cataract surgery includes a free consultation.
  • Nuffield Health: pre-assessment, the operation and post-discharge care; initial consultation from £200 extra. Nuffield says the final price may vary with consultant fees, prosthesis or drugs, and gives a fixed price after the consultation.

Which lens types cost extra?

The lens is the main thing that changes the price. These are the clinics' own descriptions in short; which lens suits your eyes is for you and the surgeon, and we do not recommend one.

  • Standard monofocal: clear at one distance, usually far. PHIN says the NHS typically offers this lens, so reading glasses are more likely afterwards.
  • Toric: designed to correct astigmatism.
  • Multifocal: aims for more than one distance, such as distance and reading. Practice Plus Group notes some people get glare and halos.
  • Extended depth of focus (EDOF): aims for distance and intermediate vision, such as a computer screen.

Prices per eye, whole package, checked 5 October 2026:

  • Newmedica: standard £2,295; premium monofocal £2,795; toric £3,195; multifocal, EDOF and their toric versions £3,595.
  • Practice Plus Group: standard £2,099; enhanced monofocal £2,249; enhanced monofocal toric £2,649; multifocal £2,949; EDOF £3,099; EDOF toric £3,249.

NICE guideline NG77 (recommendation 1.4.2) says "Do not offer multifocal intraocular lenses for people having cataract surgery". That is NICE guidance for NHS care. Private clinics offer multifocal lenses as a paid choice.

Is a later laser treatment included?

Not usually. Some people's vision clouds again months or years later because the capsule behind the new lens thickens. That is treated with a YAG laser in clinic. It is a separate, later treatment, not another cataract operation, and it is not what our form asks a clinic about. Newmedica lists £495 for one eye and Practice Plus Group £799.

What should I ask before I pay?

  • Is the first consultation included, and what does it cost?
  • Are the measurements and scans before surgery included?
  • Which lens is the price for, and what does each other lens cost?
  • Which follow-up appointments and eye drops are included?
  • Is the price for one eye? What is the price for the second?
  • What happens, and what does it cost, if I need more treatment later?

Is the consultation included in a private cataract package?

Not always. PHIN says a package does not always include your first consultation, which typically costs £180 to £250. Newmedica includes a free consultation; Practice Plus Group charges £145; Nuffield Health's starts from £200.

How much extra is a toric or multifocal lens?

At Newmedica a toric lens package is £3,195 and a multifocal or EDOF package £3,595 per eye, against £2,295 for a standard lens. At Practice Plus Group a toric package is £2,649 and an EDOF package £3,099, against £2,099. Prices checked 5 October 2026.

Does the NHS offer multifocal lenses?

NICE guideline NG77 recommends not offering multifocal lenses for people having cataract surgery, and PHIN says the NHS typically offers a monofocal lens. Private clinics offer other lenses at extra cost.

Is YAG laser part of the cataract package?

Usually not. YAG laser treats clouding that can appear later behind the new lens. It is a separate treatment; Newmedica lists £495 for one eye and Practice Plus Group £799.
