Each row is the provider's own published figure, except Spire, which we could not find on Spire's national page and show as TreatCompare reports it. Spire and Nuffield count different things in their prices, so we do not average them. Listing a clinic does not mean it is a partner of ours. We delete any row we cannot re-check. What we can and cannot do
We are not a clinic, not the NHS, not an optician and not a surgeon. We do not operate, diagnose, refer or hold a date. Nothing here is medical advice, and we cannot tell you whether you need surgery or how bad a cataract is. Only an optician or eye surgeon who examines you can do that.
Sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your sight, flashes with a shower of floaters, or a painful red eye need help now, not a form. Go to A&E or call 999.
For driving, check the DVLA eyesight guidance; we do not give driving rules. A private date does not cancel an NHS listing unless you choose to come off the NHS list.
What we can do: explain prices, what packages include and clinic types, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent eye clinic or hospital that covers your area so it can contact you. Free for you. The clinic may pay us.
Four steps to a private cataract assessment
- One eye or both. Prices are usually per eye. Ask how the second eye is priced; see second eye.
- What the package includes. Check the first consultation, tests, lens type, aftercare and later laser. See what is included.
- Clinic type. Eye-surgery clinic group or private hospital. Compare the price on the same lens and the same inclusions. See cost.
- Ask one clinic to contact you. Use the form. One partner clinic may call or email you. Nothing is booked, and no date is held, until you agree it with the clinic.
How much is cataract surgery with a monofocal lens privately?
Whole price per eye, self-pay, from each clinic's own price page, opened 7 October 2026:
- Practice Plus Group: standard monofocal £2,099; enhanced monofocal £2,249; enhanced monofocal toric £2,649. Initial consultation £145 extra; diagnostic tests charged if needed.
- Newmedica: standard monofocal £2,295; premium monofocal £2,795; premium monofocal toric £3,195. Newmedica says cataract surgery includes a free consultation.
- Nuffield Health: an average guide price of £3,613 for one eye, with no lens prices on the page we checked. TreatCompare, reading Nuffield's hospital pages on 5 October 2026, describes Nuffield's figures as one eye with a standard (monofocal) lens, median £3,545 across 26 hospitals.
The lens names are the clinics' own. For every clinic and lens type side by side, see cataract surgery cost per eye.
What is a monofocal lens?
In cataract surgery the cloudy natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. PHIN says: "The NHS typically offers a monofocal lens, which has a single point of focus. This means it may be more likely that you will need reading glasses after your surgery." The NHS says that after cataract surgery "you may still need to wear glasses for reading or seeing long distances".
Which lens suits your eyes, and what your sight is likely to be like afterwards, is for the optician or surgeon who examines you. We cannot tell you.
What is the difference between a standard and an enhanced monofocal lens?
On price: £150 per eye at Practice Plus Group (£2,099 against £2,249) and £500 at Newmedica (£2,295 against £2,795). Neither price page explains what the enhanced or premium lens does differently, so ask the clinic what it is meant to change for your sight before you pay more. Toric versions cost more again; see lens options.
Does the NHS use a monofocal lens?
PHIN says the NHS typically offers a monofocal lens. NICE guideline NG77, recommendation 1.4.2, says: "Do not offer multifocal intraocular lenses for people having cataract surgery." Recommendation 1.4.3 says to offer monovision to people who already have anisometropia or monovision before surgery and would like to keep it. That is guidance for the NHS; private clinics list other lens types too.
What does the monofocal price include?
- Practice Plus Group: consultant fees, pre-op nurse review, anaesthetic, prescriptions and post-op appointments. The £145 consultation is extra.
- Newmedica: the consultant's fee, clinic facilities, the lens and aftercare, with a free consultation.
- Not included anywhere we checked: a later YAG laser if the capsule behind the new lens clouds. Newmedica lists £495 for one eye; Practice Plus Group lists £799.

Will I still need glasses with a monofocal lens?
Possibly. PHIN says a monofocal lens has a single point of focus, so it may be more likely you will need reading glasses. The NHS says you may still need glasses for reading or seeing long distances. Your surgeon can tell you what to expect.
